What is PRP Therapy?

Researches have confirmed that Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a substance that promotes healing when injected. Plasma is a component of your blood that contains proteins. These proteins help your blood to clot and support cell growth. Researchers have produced PRP by separating plasma from blood and concentrating it.

The idea behind this is that injecting PRP into damaged tissues will help your body to grow new, healthy cells and promote healing. As the tissue growth factors are more concentrated in the prepared growth injections, researchers believe that the body's tissues may heal faster. PRP Injections are part of PRP therapy. They are used for Hair loss, tendon injuries, acute injuries, postsurgical repair, osteoarthritis. PRP Injections are given in various ways:

  • Sometimes a topical numbing lidocaine solution is applied to your scalp before injection.
  • A local anaesthetic is mixed with the PRP to reduce any discomfort.
  • Sometimes, your doctor will inject or apply PRP during a surgery.

PRP Injection process

  • The therapist will draw a sample of your blood. The amount of the sample depends on where the PRP will be injected.
  • The blood is placed into a centrifuge. This is a machine that spins around very quickly, causing the blood components to separate. The separation process takes about 15 minutes.
  • A technologist takes the separated plasma and prepares it for injection into the affected area.
  • Doctors will often use ultrasound, to figure out specific areas for injection, such as the tendon. Your doctor will then inject the PRP into the affected area.
  • The whole process takes about an hour.

Side effects of PRP

  • Tissue damage
  • Nerve injuries
  • Infection
  • Pain, where the injection has been given.
